The Fruits of Unity

“Living the unity of the Church does not mean concentrating on the past, but, rather, the present which is the season of planting,” says László Gonda, ecumenical secretary of the Transcibiscan Reformed Church District, who is also responsible for the preparations of the Hungarian Reformed Unity Day Celebration. In addition to a common worship service, music programs, prayer chain, podium discussions and choir meetings are also waiting for those interested in the program of the celebration in Debrecen on 18th May.

Holy Season at the Scottish Mission

The Church of Scotland has created an online Advent calendar with daily videos from the CofS ministries team to bring the true spirit of Christmas to life. One day will even feature St. Columba’s congregation in Budapest, a dual-affiliated church with the RCH.

The Scottish Mission in Budapest recently celebrated its 175th anniversary and members of the RCH and the Church of Scotland participated in the Jubilee. A delegation from Scotland traveled to Budapest to join in the festivities and even stayed for the following week to tour the city and see the church’s historic connections. 

Celebrating an Outreach of Love

In celebration of the 175th Anniversary of the Scottish Mission in Budapest, the CofS and the RCH will come together for a Jubilee celebration in September. The Jubilee will include a visiting delegation of Scots, a multi-media exhibition at the Mission, and a historical website highlighting the unique partnership between the two churches throughout the years.

In celebration of the 175th Anniversary of the Scottish Mission in Budapest, the RCH talks with Rev Bertalan Tamás, former Minister at the Mission, to hear about his time in the congregation. Rev Tamás was the Minister at the Mission from 1976 until 2005, a time filled with uncertainty, community building, and interfaith relations.

In an effort to learn more about the Scottish Mission in the lives of Hungarian citizens during the 175th Jubilee year, the RCH recently spoke with János Horváth about his emotional and trying times as a political prisoner in the Mission School. Horváth had attended services in the congregation as a child and then, later in life, was held prisoner in the basement of the school during the Nazi regime. He speaks poetically and with conviction about the vital work that the Mission has done in Budapest during his lifetime, and how dear the place is to his heart.

Rev Mackenzie was the Minister at the Mission from 2000 until 2005, a time when church membership grew and the congregation made an intentional effort to reach out and build relationships with refugees in their midst.

RCH Synod Legally Recognizes the Scottish Mission in Budapest

On May 11, 2016, members of RCH Synod met for the first time in the new year to discuss the legal recognition of the Scottish Mission in Budapest, as well as other topics such as youth gatherings, an updated translation of the Second Helvetic Confession, and the Reformation Jubilee.

Scottish Mission in the Midst of Revolution

15 March is a national holiday and a day of celebration throughout Hungary to remember the Hungarian revolution in 1848 and subsequent war for independence. It affected everyone in Hungary, including the Scottish Mission partners of the RCH. During this tumultuous political time, the Scots were engaged in a complex struggle to minister to a community who needed them in the midst of a city that sometimes did not want them. 

The Heidelberg Catechism – a Bestseller

The Heidelberg Catechism, the 450th anniversary of which is celebrated this year, gained immense popularity in Hungary already when it first appeared there. So much so that when Maria Theresa went to great lengths to get it out of circulation, the pastors and the faithful employed cunning tactics to continue spreading the book.

This year marks the 450th anniversary of the Heidelberg Catechism. To celebrate the occasion, the Common Synod of the Hungarian Reformed Church (HRC), made up of the Reformed Church in Hungary alongside other Hungarian Reformed communities in the Carpathian Basin, accepted the new Hungarian translation of the Catechism. The John Calvin publishing house of the RCH printed a special edition of the Catechism, which contains the full text in the languages used in Reformed congregations in the Carpathian Basin: German, English, Romanian, Slovakian and Hungarian. It has been internationally well received since its publication.

Károli Gáspár University Celebrates 20 Years of Academic Excellence

Compared to other universities around the world, Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church in Hungary is still in its adolescence, but it is nevertheless a time of celebration in Budapest as the school and students celebrate its 20th anniversary.

Celebrating 450 Years with the Heidelberg Catechism

It was 450 years ago that the Heidelberg Catechism was first published. From 1653 onward this booklet saw rapid growth, and in 2013 it is still being used by millions of people belonging to the Reformed tradition.
