“We can only survive if Hungarians in the Carpathian Basin stand by us and lend their hand”, Bishop in Sub-Carpathian Sándor Zán Fábián told at a press conference held about the assistance given through the Hungarian Reformed Church Aid (HRCA) to the communities living in the region. As announced at the event, the HRCA Sub-Carpathian Action Plan calculates with 124 million HUF, half of which has already been collected.

The Reformed Church in Sub-Carpathia, Ukraine issues peace statement

The leadership of the Reformed Church in Sub-Carpathia has issued a statement of peace, protesting any form of violence and war, and striving instead for the peaceful co-existence of all nations living in Ukraine. The statement is sent to each congregation of RCSC, to the leaders of Ukraine and Hungary, as well as European decision-makers.

Nobody Knows What's Coming

Ukrainian crisis. There is an air of uncertainty these days in Ukraine, which is also being experienced by the 150,000 Hungarians living in Sub-Carpathia. No war has officially been declared, but the partial military mobilization affects Hungarian families, as well. This means that there are Hungarians on the eastern front; moreover, the first victims have already been buried. We recently visited Beregszász (Berehove) with Sándor Pál, director of the Advisory Board of the Hungarian Reformed Church Aid.

7th Hungarian Reformed World Summit

The 7th Hungarian Reformed World Summit was held on 10 July in Sepsiszentgyörgy, Romania. During this occasion, the General Convent of the Hungarian Reformed Church also held its assembly which was opened by the Transylvanian bishop, Kató Béla. The other important event was the unveiling of a statue of John Calvin for the 450th commemoration of his death.

Faraway But Not Alone

In Debrecen on 24 May the Hungarian Reformed Church (HRC) held an event celebrating the 5th anniversary of the Reformed Church’s unity. Church leaders and thousands of people gathered in order to remember the historical moment when the Hungarian communities became united.  

A Celebration of Unity

The 24th-25th of May will be a festival weekend in the Hungarian Reformed Church (HRC). In Budapest we celebrate the reformed unity with the traditional 3-day long music festival, while in Debrecen a full-day reunion will commemorate the fifth anniversary of the HRC’s Constituting Synod in 2009. We asked Zoltán Tarr, the general secretary of the Reformed Church in Hungary about the latter.

The leadership of Gustav Adolf Werk, President Dr. Wilhelm Hüffmeier and General Secretary Enno Haaks, paid a visit to the Reformed Christian Calvinist Church in Croatia on 5-7 March. After consulting Bishop Lajos Csáti Szabó and Lay President József Kel and visiting congregations, the organizations decided to re-establish their co-operation. The General Convent of the Hungarian Reformed Church welcomed the decision and issued the following declaration stating its support.

Anything but war!

“I've just received a message on the phone: our deputy bishop has received his summons” – with this dramatic announcement, Sándor Zán Fábián opened his report on the Ukrainian crisis at  the General Convent’s presidency session of the Hungarian Reformed Church held on 7 March in Beregdaróc. Zán, the bishop in Subcarpathia, said that it is not only the pastor in Ungvár that this has happened to in the last few days. Fear and anxiety dwells in the hearts of the people, the women and mothers are worried about their husbands and sons.

At the beginning of a new year, the Reformed Church in Hungary looks forward to the organization and implementation of some very important events in 2014, most notably the Hungarian Reformed World Summit, release of the new Hungarian Bible translation, Synod/church elections, unity jubilee of the Hungarian Reformed Church and preparations for the 500th reformation jubilee.

Updated: Battle Over Church-Owned Property Still Ongoing in Romania

The Transylvanian Reformed Church District's battle with the Romanian government concerning the re-naturalization of church-owned property will come to a head 21 January when the court will reconvene for the next court session. It will likely be the final turning point in the prolonged legal battle. Bishop Béla Kató released the following statement on 18 January concerning the case:   "We look at the confiscation of our rightful property under the communist tyranny as historical injustice, and now we must suffer the fear and pain of loss again. We recognize with bitter displeasure that the Romanian administration of justice and current political powers will polish their worn prestige by once more taking away – based on half-truths and false testimonies – what was already lawfully returned and dragging through the mire the names of those who simply performed their duties in this matter."

Reformed Church leaders met from the Carpathian Basin

Celebrating the Heidelberg Catechism

This year marks the 450th anniversary of the Heidelberg Catechism. To celebrate the occasion, the Common Synod of the Hungarian Reformed Church (HRC), made up of the Reformed Church in Hungary alongside other Hungarian Reformed communities in the Carpathian Basin, accepted the new Hungarian translation of the Catechism. The John Calvin publishing house of the RCH printed a special edition of the Catechism, which contains the full text in the languages used in Reformed congregations in the Carpathian Basin: German, English, Romanian, Slovakian and Hungarian. It has been internationally well received since its publication.

Hungarians in Transylvania Appeal for Autonomy

On 26 October, the so-called Szekler National Council released a statement outlining its desire for self-government as an autonomous territory following examples established in other parts of Europe. Szeklerland is an area in eastern Transylvania, Romania, with a majority population of ethnic Hungarians. The last census in 2002 showed Szeklerland as a historical region of about 13,000 sq/km with a population of 809,000, of whom 612,043 were Szekler-Hungarians.

A Community Beyond Borders

The community of Hungarian-speaking Reformed churches from across the Carpathian Basin gathered in Debrecen on 28 June for the Common Synod of the Hungarian Reformed Church (HRC) with a special emphasis on the 450th anniversary of the Heidelberg Catechism.

Summary of the April Synod Session

The spring meeting of the Synod, the highest decision-making body of the Reformed Church in Hungary, opened with a devotion by Dean István Csegei and the 12th session of the 13th Synod cycle was officially called to session by RCH Lay President Pál Huszár.

Celebrating 450 Years with the Heidelberg Catechism

It was 450 years ago that the Heidelberg Catechism was first published. From 1653 onward this booklet saw rapid growth, and in 2013 it is still being used by millions of people belonging to the Reformed tradition.
