This past May a group of American students and their teacher decided to do their missions trip in Budapest with the refugee mission of Reformed Mission Centre (RMK). During their stay, students became acquainted with several people and families and they learned about their ways of life and the turbulent situations that forced them to flee. Part V.

Maria Kojdecka came to Budapest from Warsaw as a volunteer with no real plan of where she would work. All she knew was that she wanted to teach and wanted an adventure. Within the first few weeks of arriving in Budapest, she found herself at the community center of the Reformed Church in Hungary’s Refugee Ministry.

Patience and Courage

“Hungarian people become angry quickly, but there are patient and kind ones too,” said Sally, the 10-year-old who came from Syria with her parents. After only a few years she had learned Hungarian so well that it is not even recognizable that her mother tongue is different. She learns a lot at the study hall of the Refugee Community Center in Budapest with other foreign young people.

Abraham and Sarah, the newborn Jesus and the first Christians all experienced the compulsion to flee and the difficulties of integration, but all of them also knew the care of God. The Hungarian Bible Society and the Reformed Mission Centre have prepared a traveling exhibition that urges us to see the vulnerability of refugees and highlights our relations to them.
