Béla Kató, Bishop of the Reformed Church District in Transylvania, believes that the Minority SafePack European Citizen’s Initiative is making a change in the case of legal uncertainty for the Hungarian minorities in Transylvania. The European Parliament will only deal with the issue of the minorities if the number of signatures on the Initiative reaches 1 million from the citizens of Europe till the 3rd of April.

“I've just received a message on the phone: our deputy bishop has received his summons” – with this dramatic announcement, Sándor Zán Fábián opened his report on the Ukrainian crisis at the General Convent’s presidency session of the Hungarian Reformed Church held on 7 March in Beregdaróc. Zán, the bishop in Subcarpathia, said that it is not only the pastor in Ungvár that this has happened to in the last few days. Fear and anxiety dwells in the hearts of the people, the women and mothers are worried about their husbands and sons.

WCRC Solidarity Visit

The Steering Committee of the WCRC European Area held its last meeting in Vilnius, Lithuania between 23 and 26 January. Last decisions and arrangements were made for the upcoming Area Council to be held in Warsaw, but besides business, solidarity was at the heart of the meeting. Balázs Ódor, ecumenical officer of the Reformed Church in Hungary and vice president of WCRC European Area, was among the WCRC representatives present. This visit closely follows the organization's last trip to Lithuania for the occassion of the Evangelical Reformed Church in Lithaunia's extraordinary synod meeting in March 2013.
