Candlelight Demonstration Against Racism
2012. december 06., csütörtökOn Friday evening a protest demonstration was held in Debrecen, where representatives of historical churches, the local government, political parties and civil organisations gathered together to let their voices be heard against racism and hatred. At the event a speech was delivered by the Bishop of the Transtibiscan Reformed Church District, Gusztáv Bölcskei.
During one of the Parliament sessions on Monday, MP Márton Gyöngyösi referred to people of Jewish origin as individuals who should be discriminated against, and this statement was believed by many to be reminiscent of the Nazi propaganda, which was followed by the acts of genocide during World War II.
As a response to MP Márton Gyöngyösi's offensive remark, the Bishop shared the following thoughts: "these hurtful words did not vanish, but touched and deeply stirred the souls of many. It is necessary to raise our voices in this moment." Gusztáv Bölcskei went on to discuss that any kind of distinction and "listing" based on ethnic origin is a work of the devil. "What if Hungarians outside the borders were to be put on lists due to their Hungarian roots? What if in regard to dual citizenship, politicians from our neighbouring countries would mention the risk of national security?"
The event was attended by Nándor Bosák, Bishop of the Debrecen-Nyíregyháza Catholic Church District, Tamás Horovitz, President of the Debrecen Jewish Community District, Lajos Kósa, Mayor of Debrecen, representatives of the Fidesz, MSZP, DK parties and civil organisations. Despite the rain, approximately 100 people filled Kossuth square. The demonstration concluded with the national anthem.
