A new Master of Theology: Biblical Perspectives in Our Society will open in the 2018-2019 Fall semester at Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church in Hungary (KRE). The two-year Master’s program, accredited by the Hungarian Accreditation Committee, is being offered in English and is suited as a degree preparing for teaching ministry and/or doctoral studies. The program will offer a hermeneutical and contextual approach in all theological disciplines and introduce deep biblical insights to current problems in society.

The Master’s program consists of two phases. The first phase is a two-semester general studies of Biblical languages (Hebrew or Greek), Biblical Hermeneutics and Exegesis, Systematic Theology, History and Presence of Church and Society, and Living and Serving in the Church (Spirituality, Community, and Communication). In the second phase, students may choose two of five special study modules. The fourth semester will conclude with a final Master’s thesis.

The five special study modules are Church and State, Church and Israel, Ethics in a Technical Society, Gospel on the Periphery (including Roma and Refugee issues), and Youth Ministry. The Church and State module examines particular relationships between the Church and state from the persecution of Christians to the recent struggles of the Church in totalitarian regimes. The Church and Israel module focuses on main events and special theological developments in the relationship between Judaism and Christianity.

Ethics in a Technical Society is a module that explores the basic relations between theological ethics and emerging technologies, focusing on the current ecological crisis. Field studies will be made in the Eco-Congregation Movement in Hungary and students will receive international insights through the European Christian Environmental Network (ECEN) and get involved in ecumenical work with other similar movements.

The module, Gospel on the Periphery, introduces Missiology through integrating research practices with methodological and theoretical readings. Students will conceptualize and execute fieldwork projects while developing practical mission skills among the Roma and migrants. Finally, the Youth Ministry module focuses primarily on Christian Education in the local church and professional skills needed for Pastoral ministry and teaching. Students will seek to integrate a theologically informed perspective with sound principles to create a philosophy of youth ministry.

Admission requirements include a BA in Christian Religious Studies, sufficient oral communication skills in English and ability to write academic papers, substantial knowledge of the Bible, general knowledge of Church history and Christian doctrines, and basic skills in the field of practical theology (e.g., preaching, counseling, building and managing communities).
